It serves as the administrative heart of the Analamanga region. The city is situated in the center of the island. It sits at a high elevation above sea level. This makes it the highest national capital among all island nations.

Because of its central location and importance, it has been the largest population center since at least the 18th century. It functions as the primary hub for Madagascar's political, economic, and educational systems.

The city's development relied on complex social and physical systems. Early Merina kings utilized a system called fanampoana, which is statute labor.

This labor built massive dikes and irrigated paddy fields. The largest of these is the Betsimitatatra. These fields provide essential rice for the growing population. Later, the city's physical structure changed through new technologies. James Cameron introduced brickmaking to the island.

This led to the creation of the trano gasy. These are two-story brick houses with wooden verandas. During the French colonial period, engineers also constructed tunnels through large hills. These tunnels helped connect different districts as the city expanded.

Antananarivo has transitioned through several distinct political stages. It began as the village of Analamanga, meaning "Blue Forest."

The city then served as the capital of the Kingdom of Imerina. It remained the capital through the French colonial era starting in 1897. It has remained the capital following Madagascar's independence in 1960.

The history of the city is marked by significant leaders and shifts in power. King Andrianampoinimerina captured the province in 1794. He restored Antananarivo as the capital of a united Kingdom of Imerina.

His son, Radama I, expanded control over two-thirds of the island. Radama I opened the city to European missionaries in 1820. These missionaries established the first public schools. Later, Queen Ranavalona I oversaw major infrastructure projects. She commissioned the construction of the large Manjakamiadana palace.

Today, the city is a massive metropolitan center. The 2018 census recorded 1,274,225 inhabitants in the city.

The total metropolitan population approaches three million people. This growth brings significant challenges to the Commune Urbaine d'Antananarivo (CUA). The city must manage overcrowding, traffic, and waste management. It also faces issues with pollution and public water and electricity. Despite these struggles, the city remains the most diverse place on the island. All eighteen Malagasy ethnic groups live here. Residents of Chinese, Indian, and European origins are also represented.

Many notable landmarks define the landscape of Antananarivo. Visitors can explore the reconstructed royal palaces and the Andafiavaratra Palace.
