Antsirabe is a major urban center in the central highlands of Madagascar.

It serves as the capital of the Vakinankaratra region. The city is the third-largest in the country. According to 2014 data, it had a population of 265,018 people. The Malagasy name for the city means "the place of much salt."

Because of its many thermal springs, it is often called the "city of water" in French. It also has nicknames like "le Vichy malgache" in French and Malagasy. This refers to its status as a place for mineral waters.

The geography of the area is shaped by significant volcanic activity. Antsirabe sits near the Ankaratra volcanic field. This field stretches about 100 km from the city toward Arivonimamo. It is considered the most volcanologically diverse area in Madagascar. This activity created several water-filled craters in the landscape.

Lake Tritriva lies 15 km to the southwest. Lake Andraikiba is much closer at only 7 km away. The Mania River also flows south of the city. These features make the region a unique part of the island's landscape.

The climate in Antsirabe is a subtropical highland climate. This is known scientifically as a Cwb climate. It is similar to high-altitude cities in southeastern Brazil. The weather is relatively cool compared to other parts of Madagascar. From May to September, the weather is cold and dry. During these months, average temperatures stay between 11°C and 18°C. The number of rainy days is very low, at only 1 to 2 per month. In the winter, nighttime temperatures can drop below 0°C. Antsirabe holds the record for the lowest temperature ever measured in Madagascar.

Antsirabe has a complex history involving various kingdoms and missions. The area was once part of the Kingdom of Andrantsay. This kingdom existed from the early 1600s until the early 1800s. At that time, the land was used for farming rice and fruit. Norwegian Lutheran missionaries arrived in the area in 1868. In 1872, a missionary named T.G. Rosaas founded the city. He established it as a hill station for retreats. He chose this location because of its cool climate. In 1886, a mission started the Ambohipiantrana leper hospital. By 1904, approximately 950 people lived there due to the illness.

Architectural history is visible throughout the central parts of the city. Many buildings date to the first decades of the 20th century. The thermal bath centre opened in 1917. The Hôtel des Thermes was built in 1922.
