Seychelles is a very small nation in terms of size and population. It is the smallest country in Africa. It is also the least populated sovereign African country. In 2022, the population was estimated to be 100,600 people. The islands were uninhabited before people from other places arrived. While Arab and Swahili sailors likely knew of the islands, they did not live there permanently. There is no evidence of permanent settlement before European involvement. This lack of indigenous inhabitants shaped the early history of the islands.

European discovery began in the 16th century. The 4th Portuguese India Armada, led by Vasco da Gama, discovered the islands in 1503.

During this voyage, ships saw islands like Silhouette and Desroches. The Portuguese even mapped seven islands and named them "The Seven Sisters." Later, France formally claimed the islands in the 18th century. They named the islands after the French politician Jean Moreau de Séchelles. In 1770, the French ship Thélémaque landed settlers and enslaved people on Ste. Anne Island. This began the period of French colonization and plantation labor.

Control of the islands changed hands between European powers. The islands faced competing interests from both France and Britain. In 1794, a British naval frigate arrived at Mahé. The local administrator negotiated with the British to keep the islands neutral. However, British forces eventually invaded the Isle de France in 1810. This led to full British control, which was formalized in the 1814 Treaty of Paris. After Britain took control, they abolished slavery. To meet labor needs, they brought in indentured laborers from India. This created a multicultural foundation for the modern Seychellois society.

Seychelles gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1976.

Since then, the nation has transformed its economy. It moved from a largely agricultural society to a market-based economy. Today, the economy is diversified through services, the public sector, and tourism.

The economic growth has been significant. From 1976 to 2015, nominal GDP grew by nearly 700%. Purchasing power parity grew by nearly 1600% during that same period. The country now has the highest nominal per capita GDP in Africa. It also has the highest Human Development Index ranking on the continent.

The political history of the republic has seen many changes. After independence, a coup d'état in 1977 ousted the first president, James Mancham.

France-Albert René took power and established a socialist one-party state. This system lasted until 1991. There were also various coup attempts, including one in 1981 involving South African mercenaries. In 2020, a historic election occurred when the opposition party won. Wavel Ramkalawan became the first president not from the long-ruling party. Most recently, in October 2025, Patrick Herminie was sworn in as the sixth president.

Modern Seychelles is a vibrant, multicultural society. The culture is an eclectic mix of French, British, Indian, and African influences. It also includes Chinese elements. The people maintain a unique Creole heritage. The government is also focused on environmental protection. In 2012, the government committed to protecting 30% of its marine waters. This supports a "blue economy," which uses ocean resources sustainably.
