The island has a tropical climate. This warm weather helped people grow many things on large farms called plantations. For a long time, the main crop was sugar. People also grew coffee and geraniums for perfume. In 1841, a man named Edmond Albius found a way to hand-pollinate vanilla flowers. This discovery made the island a top producer of vanilla in the world.

Before people arrived, the island was uninhabited. Portuguese explorers likely saw it in the early 1500s. They called it Santa Apolónia after a saint. Later, the French took control in the 1600s. They named it Isle Bourbon after a French royal house.

The history of the people is very important. In the 17th century, French settlers arrived. They used enslaved people from East Africa to work the fields. Later, many workers came from places like India, China, and Vietnam. Slavery was ended on 20 December 1848. This is a day the people celebrate every year. Today, most people on the island have mixed roots.
