A large coral reef grows in the water all around the island. This reef creates a lagoon where eighteen small islets sit. The coral here is very special because it grows all by itself. It does not get new coral from other places.

History tells us that people visited these islands long ago. Arabs are known to have visited the Mascarene Islands starting in the 10th century. Later, a Portuguese explorer named Diogo Rodrigues found the island in 1528. The island has had many different names on old maps. In 1691, a group of people tried to start a farm there. They found many tortoises, birds, and fish on the island. Later, the French and the British both held control of the island.

They also make things by hand and work in tourism. About 43,650 people live on the island today.

Nature on Rodrigues has changed a lot over the years. Many animals that lived here are now extinct. This means they are gone forever, like the giant Rodrigues solitaire bird. There were also two types of giant tortoises that lived here. Today, some special animals are still trying to survive. The Rodrigues warbler is a small bird found only here.
