The islands are part of Mauritius. They are managed by a group called the Outer Island Development Corporation. This group works for the Prime Minister of Mauritius. The islands are known for many things. People there grow many coconut trees. They also make coconut oil to sell. You might even see a tiny lizard called the Agaléga day gecko.

Life on the islands follows the rhythm of the weather. The climate is hot and humid. The average temperature stays around 27 degrees Celsius. It can get as low as 23 degrees or as high as 31 degrees. April is usually the hottest month. The warm weather helps mangrove and coconut trees grow.

Most people live in small villages. You can find villages named Vingt-Cinq and La Fourche on the North Island. St. Rita is a village on the South Island. There is no running water for the homes. People catch rain in gutters to drink. They also get water from wells.

People have been visiting these islands for a very long time. Some say Portuguese explorers found them in 1501. One idea is that a man named João da Nova named them. He was a Galician explorer. Another story says a man named Dom Pedro Mascarenhas named them in 1512. He might have named them after his two sailboats.

In 1827, a man named Auguste Le Duc arrived. He helped organize the making of coconut oil. There are still old monuments from that time. These include an oil mill and old cemeteries. Some of these were made by people who were once enslaved.

Today, about 330 people live on the islands. These people are called Agaléens. They speak a language called Creole. They also practice the Catholic religion.

The islands have a small airstrip on the North Island. Small planes can land there. A longer airstrip was also built for larger planes. Most electricity comes from diesel generators. This power is only available for a few hours each day. People can travel to the main island of Mauritius by air or by sea. A health officer and a midwife help keep everyone well.

Things are changing on Agaléga right now. India and Mauritius are working together on new projects. This includes building things for military use. These changes have made the islands look different.

The islands also face hard times from nature. In December 2024, a big storm called Cyclone Chido hit the North Island. The storm destroyed many homes. It also took away the electricity. Even with these changes, the islands remain a unique part of the Indian Ocean.
