The map shows where these islands sit in the sea. There are six main islands in this archipelago. They include Île aux Cochons and Île de la Possession. The islands are quite far from any large landmass.

The weather on the islands is very cold and wet. It has a maritime-influenced tundra climate. It rains on about 300 days every year. The winds are also very strong. Winds over 100 kilometers per hour happen on 100 days a year. Temperatures stay low most of the time. In summer, it might reach 10 degrees Celsius. In winter, it can drop to 0 degrees Celsius. There are no trees or shrubs to provide shelter. Instead, you will see mosses, grasses, and lichens.

Explorers first found these islands in 1772. A French explorer named Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne led the trip. His second-in-command, Julien-Marie Crozet, landed on Île de la Possession. He claimed the islands for France. Later, the famous explorer James Cook visited them too. He named the western group Marion and the eastern group Crozet. In the 1800s, many ships came to hunt seals. This was hard work for the sailors. Many ships even wrecked on the rocky coasts. One crew even tied a note to an albatross to ask for help.

Today, the islands are a protected nature reserve. This started back in 1938. Most of the islands are empty of people. However, there is a permanent research station called Alfred Faure. It is located at Port Alfred on Île de la Possession. Between 18 and 30 people live there at a time. They study things like weather, biology, and rocks. They even use a seismograph to watch the earth.

The French government patrols the waters to protect the area.

Many amazing animals call these islands home. Millions of penguins live in the cold water and on the land. There are 2 million pairs of macaroni penguins. There are also 700,000 pairs of king penguins. You can also find seals, like the southern elephant seal. Some killer whales live in the area all year. These whales are very smart hunters. They sometimes beach themselves on purpose to catch seals. This is a rare skill they learn from their families.
