Adélie Land

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Adélie Land is a large part of Antarctica. France claims this territory as its own. It sits along the coast of the Southern Ocean. The land stretches from the sea all the way to the South Pole. It shares borders with the Australian Antarctic Territory. This territory sits near Clarie Land to the west. It also sits near George V Land to the east.

Most of this land is covered by huge glaciers. The ground is mostly made of ice. The coast is a very wild place. It is known for strong katabatic winds. These winds push snow and sea ice away from the shore. In 1915, some people called it the stormiest spot on Earth. It is the only part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands that is not an island.

A French explorer named Jules Dumont d'Urville found this coast. He arrived there in January 1840. He named the land after his wife, Adèle. This discovery is why France claims the area today. The first research station was called Port Martin. It was built in 1950. Sadly, a fire destroyed Port Martin in 1952. All the people were moved to safety at Base Marret on Petrel Island.

Scientists still work in Adélie Land today. The Dumont d'Urville Station is a very large base. It sits on Petrel Island, which is 5 kilometres from the mainland. It was built in 1956 for a big science project. About 120 people stay there during the summer. In the winter, about 30 people stay to study the land. They look at things like weather, biology, and ice.

Many animals live in this icy world. You can find seals and emperor penguins there. Adélie penguins also live in this area. Before 2017, there were about 18,000 pairs of Adélie penguins. Sometimes, too much sea ice makes life hard for them. In 2017, the ice forced them to travel very far. This caused many newborn penguins to die from hunger.
