Traveling through the sound can be a very hard job. Much of the water is covered in thick ice. This includes fast ice that stays stuck to the shore. There is also hard multi-year ice. Because of this, most ships need a strong hull. Many ships must use icebreakers to push through the ice.

These icebreakers help clear a path for supply ships. They bring food and fuel to McMurdo Station. They also help reach the New Zealand Scott Base.

Explorers have visited this place for a long time. Captain James Clark Ross found the sound in February 1841. He named it after Lieutenant Archibald McMurdo. In the early 1900s, explorers used the area for travel. Ernest Shackleton and Robert Scott built bases here. They used the shoreline to start trips to the South Pole. Today, the area is still very important for science. It serves as a main way to reach Antarctic bases.

The weather in McMurdo Sound is very extreme. Cold air falls from the high polar plateau. This creates fierce winds called katabatic winds. These winds can reach hurricane force near the coast. They can also cause sudden blizzards called "Herbies."

The water is also very cold. In the winter, the sound freezes over with sea ice. During the summer, the ice may break up and move north. This movement can stir up cold water from the deep ocean. This cold water can then spread to other parts of the world.

Even in the freezing water, many living things thrive. You can find penguins, such as Adélie and Emperor penguins. Seals like the Weddell and leopard seal live here too.

Even tiny krill live in the upper parts of the water. This rich life makes the sound a very special place.
