It sits on the southern tip of Ross Island. The station is the largest community on the whole continent. It can support up to 1,200 people at one time. However, the population changes with the seasons. During the dark Antarctic night, fewer than 200 people stay behind.

This station serves as a main center for many scientific projects. It is one of three year-round United States science facilities in Antarctica.

Getting to McMurdo can be a big job. Many people and supplies arrive by ship or plane.

The seaport is at Winter Quarters Bay. Sometimes, thick sea ice makes it hard to reach the port. In those cases, an icebreaker ship might be needed to clear a path.

People also use airfields like Phoenix Airfield and Williams Field. These runways are built on the ice. The station also starts the South Pole Traverse, which is a road made of snow and ice.

McMurdo has a long and interesting history. It was first established in the mid-1950s.

It started as part of an international program to study Antarctica for peaceful purposes. The United States officially opened the station on February 16, 1956. This was part of a mission called Operation Deep Freeze.

At first, the U.S. Navy ran the base. They called it the Naval Air Facility McMurdo. By 1993, the Navy left and the National Science Foundation took over.

There are many facts to learn about this place. The station is named after Lieutenant Archibald McMurdo.

It is located near the active volcano, Mount Erebus. The station uses generators and wind power for electricity.

It even used a nuclear reactor for power in the 1960s.

McMurdo is a long way from New Zealand. The distance is about the same as from New York to Los Angeles. This makes it a very remote place to live.

McMurdo helps scientists study many different things. It supports the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station.

Many different research projects use the station as a base. Some scientists look for meteorites from space. Others study the ice or use large balloons to study the air.
