This community has a long and interesting history. The town was officially founded on April 9, 1984. A group of 18 settlers arrived earlier that year in February. In 1984, a boy named Juan Pablo Camacho became the first Chilean born in Antarctica. He was born in November of that year. At the time, a ceremony was held at the La Moneda Palace to celebrate him. For many years, children attended the F-50 Villa Las Estrellas School. This school taught students from 1st to 8th grade.

Daily life in the village follows the changing seasons. During the summer, about 150 people live in the town. In the winter, the population drops to 80 people. The post office is very busy during the summer months. It receives mail from Punta Arenas and sends it to other stations. People travel there to send postcards with a special Antarctic postmark. Travelers can arrive by plane or helicopter. The nearest airport is the Teniente R. Marsh Airport. It is the only airport in Antarctica with an IATA code.

The weather in Villa Las Estrellas is a marine tundra climate. This means it is very cold. In the summer, temperatures are only just above freezing. This can make the environment hard for people to live in. The sun also does not shine very much during the year. This lack of light can lead to low vitamin D or even depression. However, the winters are milder than places like Alaska or northern Norway. It is a unique place where the cold is part of every day.
