Villa Las Estrellas is a permanently inhabited outpost located on King George Island. Its name translates from Spanish as "The Stars Village" or "Hamlet of the Stars."

The settlement sits within the Chilean Antarctic Territory. However, the location is also part of the Argentine and British Antarctic claims. It is situated on the President Eduardo Frei Montalva Base, which is a research station. Villa Las Estrellas is one of only two civilian settlements on the entire continent of Antarctica. The other civilian settlement is Argentina's Esperanza Base.

The community functions through several specialized services and buildings. There are fourteen homes where the residents live. For medical needs, the town has a Chilean Air Force Hospital. This facility is staffed by one doctor and one nurse. It contains a pharmacy, a laboratory, and a dental clinic. The hospital also has an X-ray machine, a sterilizer, and an anesthesia machine. Because medical access is limited, all residents must have their appendixes removed before moving to the village. This is a required safety precaution.

Communication and commerce are managed by a few dedicated people. A single banker operates a branch of the Banco de Crédito e Inversiones. The town also features a small souvenir shop run by the local women. For mail, there is a Correos de Chile post office.

During the summer, a postal worker staffs the office. In the winter, the base command manages the mail. The office receives all mail from Punta Arenas. It acts as a relay station for Chilean installations and some foreign facilities. Tourists often visit to send postcards with a unique Antarctic postmark.

The settlement has a distinct history of habitation and growth. The town was officially founded on April 9, 1984. However, the first group of 18 settlers arrived on February 15, 1984. The F-50 Antarctic School was inaugurated on the same day as the town. In November 1984, a boy named Juan Pablo Camacho was born there. He was the first Chilean conceived and born on Antarctic territory. A ceremony was held at the La Moneda Palace to honor him. At that time, the dictator Pinochet provided life insurance and financial support for his studies.

Education and social life are centered around specific community hubs. The F-50 "Villa Las Estrellas" School served the community for 33 years. It operated until 2018 and educated more than 300 children. By 2014, the school had only six students remaining. The sports center serves as the main hub for the community. Residents use it for basketball, volleyball, tennis, and babyfútbol. It also contains exercise machines, a sauna, and ping pong tables. The center is used for cultural activities, scientific talks, and even voting.

Technology helps residents stay connected to the rest of the world. Telephones operate via satellite, and there is a coin-operated pay phone. Since 2005, an antenna from the company Entel PCS has provided mobile service. The town uses a 2.5-meter dish to receive live television signals from Santiago. These include Televisión Nacional and Universidad Católica Television. For information, a radio broadcasts on 90.5 MHz during the day. It provides music and news to all the nearby bases.

The climate in Villa Las Estrellas is classified as a marine tundra climate. This means the environment is often hostile to human inhabitants. During the summer, temperatures are only just above freezing. The low levels of sunshine can lead to depression or vitamin D deficiencies. However, the winters are often milder than other polar regions. For example, winters here are milder than in parts of Alaska, Canada, or Siberia. This makes the climate more tolerable than the muggy, insect-filled summers of northern Norway or Finland.
