The geography of Ushuaia is defined by dramatic landforms and water.

Because travelers must cross the Andes mountain range to reach it, Ushuaia is a trans-Andean city.

The climate in Ushuaia is a maritime-moderated mild tundra.

This means conditions stay cool but rarely become extremely cold. The average temperature stays between 0 °C and 10 °C throughout the year. July is typically the coolest month, while January is the warmest. The area is very humid, with an average humidity of 77 percent.

It experiences about 146 days of precipitation every year. The sky is often cloudy or foggy, with about 206 cloudy days on average. Because of this, the city only receives about 3.93 hours of sunshine per day. Despite these conditions, the area is heavily forested rather than looking like a typical bare tundra.

The history of the region began long before modern cities existed.

British missionaries were among the first Europeans to establish a presence. In 1869, Waite Hockin Stirling stayed with the Yaghan people. Thomas Bridges later became a fluent speaker of the Yaghan language. He even created a custom alphabet to write a dictionary of the language. This important manuscript was eventually published after many years of effort.

Formal settlement began in the late 19th century.

This prison received its first inmates in 1896. The prisoners became forced colonists who helped build the growing town. They used timber from local forests to construct buildings. They also built a railway, which is now a famous tourist attraction. This is known as the End of the World Train.

The prison system played a massive role in the city's development.

The prison was modeled after systems in Tasmania and Devil's Island. It grew as a complex that included a military prison at Puerto Golondrina. The two facilities merged into one complex in 1910. This prison operated for many decades until 1947. President Juan Domingo Perón closed it due to reports of unsafe practices and abuse.

A memorial now stands in the port to honor the cruiser ARA General Belgrano. This ship sailed from Ushuaia before it was sunk by the British Fleet. The city remains a vital, busy link between South America and the Antarctic.
