Tierra del Fuego is a large archipelago located at the southernmost tip of South America.

It sits across the Strait of Magellan from the mainland. The archipelago includes a massive main island called Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego.

This main island covers an area of 73,746 square kilometers. The archipelago also contains many smaller islands, such as the Diego Ramírez Islands and Cape Horn. The land is divided between two nations. Chile governs the western two-thirds of the archipelago. Argentina governs the eastern portion. This division was finalized after the signing of the Boundary Treaty of 1881.

The geography of the islands is shaped by complex geological forces. The region was influenced by the Andean orogeny, which is the process of mountain building.

Repeated glaciations during the Pleistocene epoch also changed the landscape. The archipelago features several distinct topographical regions. There is an outer archipelago region to the south and west. The south contains a mountainous region known as the Región Cordillerana. The eastern part consists of a plains region and a sub-Andean zone. The Cordillera Darwin is a major mountain range in the southwest. This range hosts many glaciers that flow directly into the ocean.

The highest peak in the archipelago is an unnamed mountain called Monte Shipton. It reaches a height of 2,580 metres.

Geological activity is visible in the structures of the islands. The Magallanes-Fagnano Fault is an active strike-slip fault. This fault crosses the southern part of the main island from west to east. It marks the boundary between different types of rock layers. Fagnano Lake sits in a depression created by this fault zone. This lake was carved out by ancient glaciers. In the north, the Magallanes foreland contains a sedimentary basin. This basin is important because it hosts large hydrocarbon reserves. Some oil wells in the north sit above orthogneiss rock. This specific rock is dated to 525 million years old.

The climate in Tierra del Fuego is classified as subpolar oceanic.

This means the region experiences short, cool summers and long, wet winters. Precipitation levels vary significantly across the islands. In the far west, annual rainfall averages 3,000 mm. However, the amount of rain decreases as you move toward the east. Temperatures remain quite steady throughout the year. In the city of Ushuaia, summer temperatures rarely go above 9 °C. In the winter, the average temperature is around 0 °C. Snow can fall even during the summer months. In the most southern islands, the climate becomes a sub-antarctic tundra. In these areas, the weather is too harsh for trees to grow.

Vegetation in the archipelago is quite specialized. Only about 30% of the islands are covered by forests. These are known as Magellanic subpolar forests.

There are six species of trees found here. These include the canelo tree and the Pilgerodendron uviferum. The latter is the southernmost conifer in the world. There are also three types of southern beech, or Nothofagus.

Because the winds are so powerful, many trees grow in twisted shapes. People call these unique trees "flag-trees." In the open spaces, you can find fruits like calafate and beach strawberry. These fruits have been gathered by native people and settlers for a long time.

Human history in the region began very early. The earliest known settlements date back to approximately 8,000 BC.

The Yahgan people were among the first to inhabit the islands. In 1520, the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived during his expedition. He was the first European to visit the area. He named the islands "Tierra del Fuego," which means "Land of Fire." He saw many fires burning along the coastlines. He believed these fires were made by the indigenous inhabitants. Later, in the nineteenth century, European settlement increased. This was driven by a gold rush and sheep farming. This period caused great hardship and displacement for the native Selk'nam and Yaghan populations.

Today, the economy of the archipelago is diverse. In the northern part of the main island, petroleum extraction is the dominant activity.

This industry began in earnest after oil was discovered in 1945. In the southern regions, the economy relies on tourism and manufacturing. The islands also serve as a hub for Antarctic logistics. This means they support the movement of supplies to Antarctica.

Some locations are extremely remote. Puerto Toro is considered one of the southernmost villages in the world. The islands remain a vital link between South America and the Antarctic region.
