Dorado

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Dorado is a prominent constellation located in the Southern Sky. It is one of the 88 modern constellations recognized by astronomers today. The name Dorado comes from the Spanish word for golden. This refers to the mahi-mahi, a fish also known as a dolphinfish or goldfish. Some historical depictions have also shown the constellation as a swordfish. This star pattern is significant because it contains the South Ecliptic pole. This pole is a vital point in celestial coordinates and lies near the fish's head.

The stars within Dorado exhibit many different behaviors and characteristics. Alpha Doradus is the brightest star in the constellation. It is a blue-white star located 176 light-years from Earth. Beta Doradus is another notable star. It is a yellow-tinged supergiant and a Cepheid variable star. A variable star is one that changes in brightness over time. Beta Doradus has a period of 9 days and 20 hours. It reaches a maximum magnitude of 3.5 and a minimum of 4.1.

Other stars in Dorado are even more extreme in their physical properties. R Doradus is a variable star with a very large appearance. It has the largest-known apparent size of any star other than our Sun. S Doradus is a hypergiant located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It serves as the prototype for a specific type of variable star called S Doradus variables. The binary system WOH G64 is also found here. It contains the largest known star with a well-defined radius. This star is 1,540 solar radii in size.

History shows how our understanding of Dorado has evolved over centuries. Petrus Plancius named the constellation in the late 16th century. He used observations made by Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman. The constellation appeared on a celestial globe in 1597 or 1598. It was later included in Johann Bayer's Uranometria in 1603. In 1627, Johannes Kepler included it in the Rudolphine Tables. He used the alternative name Xiphias, which means swordfish. Eventually, the name Dorado became the official term adopted by the International Astronomical Union.

Dorado is exceptionally rich in deep-sky objects due to the Large Magellanic Cloud. This is a satellite galaxy of our own Milky Way. The galaxy is 25,000 light-years in diameter and contains over 10,000 million stars. It is located at a distance of 179,000 light-years from Earth. The galaxy's shape has been deformed by gravity from the Milky Way. In 1987, the supernova SN 1987A occurred within this galaxy. This was the closest supernova to occur since the invention of the telescope.

Many diverse structures exist within this region of space. The Tarantula Nebula, or 30 Doradus, is a massive nebula. It is 1,000 light-years in diameter and is larger than any nebula in the Milky Way. It is illuminated by the bright stars of the NGC 2070 cluster. Another feature is the N44 superbubble, which is also 1,000 light-years wide. This bubble is shaped by 40 hot stars at its center. Within it lies the N44F bubble, which is 35 light-years across. This smaller bubble is shaped by a star with a wind speed of 7 million kilometers per hour.

Recent discoveries continue to make Dorado a place of intense study. In early 2020, astronomers discovered the exoplanet TOI-700 d. This planet orbits the star TOI-700 within the constellation. It is the first potentially Earth-like exoplanet found by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite. Other interesting objects include HE 0437-5439, a hypervelocity star. This star is actually escaping from the Milky Way and Magellanic Cloud system. Even the ancient traditions of Chinese astronomy recognize these stars. They are known as the White Patches Attached and the Goldfish.
