life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The mahi-mahi, also known as the common dolphinfish, is a striking ray-finned fish.

These fish live in the surface waters of temperate, tropical, and subtropical oceans. They are found worldwide in places like the Gulf of Mexico, Hawaii, and the Indian Ocean. The name mahi-mahi comes from the Hawaiian language. It uses a process called reduplication to mean "very strong."

This fish is a vital part of marine ecosystems and human economies.

Physically, the mahi-mahi is built for speed and survival in the open ocean. They have compressed bodies and a very long dorsal fin. This fin runs from the head almost all the way to the tail. One of the most notable features is sexual dimorphism, which means males and females look different. Mature males develop a large, protruding hump on their foreheads. Females instead have more rounded heads. Their sides are a brilliant gold, while their backs and sides show bright blues and greens.

When pulled out of the water, their colors change rapidly before fading to a dull yellow-grey.

These fish are highly active predators that move through the water with great agility. They are carnivores that hunt a variety of prey. Their diet includes flying fish, crabs, squid, mackerel, and other small forage fish. They may even eat tiny organisms called zooplankton. To catch this prey, they swim at incredible speeds of up to 49 miles per hour.

They often seek out floating debris like wood, palm fronds, or sargassum weed to find food.

The life cycle of a mahi-mahi is very fast compared to many other species. They reach sexual maturity within their first year, often by 4 to 5 months of age. Females can spawn two to three times every year. During a single spawning event, a female can produce between 80,000 and 1,000,000 eggs.

The young fish are often found living in rafts of sargassum weeds. While they can live up to five years, most mahi-mahi seldom live longer than four.

Humans have a long history of interacting with the mahi-mahi. An ancient fresco from the Minoan civilization around 1600 BCE shows a fisherman with a fish. In 1758, the scientist Carl Linnaeus named the genus. He chose a Greek word meaning "top" or "apex" because these fish live near the surface. Today, they are important for both sport fishing and commercial industries.

In some places, like the Philippines, fishermen use specialized boats to harpoon them.

There are important safety and environmental factors to consider when eating mahi-mahi. Some people may experience ciguatera poisoning from eating them. This happens because the fish accumulate toxins from eating certain marine algae. They can also cause scombroid food poisoning if they are not stored properly. This occurs when bacteria convert the fish's histidine into histamine.

Because of this, experts suggest eating them in moderation, such as six servings or fewer per month.

The mahi-mahi even has a place in our study of the stars. In 1598, the constellation Dorado was created and named after this fish.

This constellation is located near the Large Magellanic Cloud in the night sky. On Earth, the fish connects to many different fields of study. We study them to understand ocean currents and how food moves through the sea. They remain a bright and important part of our natural world.
