Summers are short and cool. Winters are long and stay moderately mild. In some places, it can even snow during the summer months. This wet weather helps keep the ancient glaciers from melting.

He gave the islands their name, which means "Land of Fire." He saw many fires burning along the coast. He thought the people were using them for warmth or signals. Later, many people moved there to find gold during a gold rush.

There are many interesting facts about the land and its life.

Only about 30% of the islands are covered in forests. These forests are special because they grow in such cold weather. You can find six different types of trees there. Some trees grow in twisted shapes because the wind is so strong.

People call these "flag-trees." You can also find small fruits like beach strawberries and calafate in the open spaces. The highest mountain is an unnamed peak called Monte Shipton. It stands 2,580 metres tall.

Today, people use the islands in many different ways. In the north, people work to find and use petroleum, which is a type of oil.

In the south, many people visit for tourism. The islands are also important for Antarctic logistics. This means they help ships and supplies travel to Antarctica.
