Patagonia is a vast geographical region in southern South America.

It spans across parts of both Argentina and Chile. This territory is defined by its extreme natural diversity and massive scale. The region is bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. To the south, several major waterways connect these two oceans. These include the Strait of Magellan, the Beagle Channel, and the Drake Passage.

Because its northern boundaries are not always precisely defined, geographers use different markers. In Argentina, the Colorado and Barrancas rivers often mark the northern limit. In Chile, many historians point to the Huincul Fault as the northern border.

The landscape of Patagonia changes dramatically based on its position relative to the Andes mountains. The western portion sits within the southern Andes mountain range. This area is characterized by high peaks, deep fjords, and temperate rainforests.

It is a wet and icy environment filled with massive glaciers and lakes. In contrast, the eastern portion consists of much drier terrain. This side of the mountains features vast deserts, tablelands, and steppes.

These open plains are much flatter and more arid than the rugged western coast.

The history of the region involves many different groups of people and shifting cultures. Before Spanish explorers arrived, several indigenous groups inhabited the land. In the northwest, some small communities practiced limited agriculture. Most other groups lived as hunter-gatherers.

In the eastern plains, people traveled on foot. In the western fjords, they used dugout canoes and dalcas to navigate the channels.

During the colonial period, the introduction of the horse changed life for many. Northeastern groups adopted a nomadic lifestyle based on horseback riding.

Spanish exploration changed the political landscape of the region. The Spanish Crown sent expeditions to establish settlements. Their main goal was strategic. They wanted to prevent other European powers from claiming the territory. After gaining independence, Chile and Argentina both asserted sovereignty over the southern lands. They began colonizing their Patagonian claims during the 19th and early 20th centuries. This expansion led to a severe decline in indigenous populations. Settlers from Argentina, Europe, and the Chiloé Archipelago disrupted indigenous societies. Military campaigns by both countries eventually crushed indigenous resistance.

The name "Patagonia" has a fascinating and complex etymology. It likely comes from the word *patagón* or *patagão*. This term was used by Ferdinand Magellan in 1520. His expedition believed the native tribes were giants. These people are now believed to have been the Tehuelche.

Some researchers suggest the name might even link to a literary character named Patagon. This character appeared in a 16th-century Spanish novel. He was described as a strange, misshapen creature with feet like a hart. Another hypothesis suggests the name comes from Paphlagonia, a region in modern Turkey.

Today, the economies of the two sides of Patagonia are quite different. The Argentine side relies heavily on sheep farming and resource extraction.

They extract significant amounts of oil and natural gas from the ground. In Chilean Patagonia, the economy is dominated by different industries. These include fishing, salmon aquaculture, and tourism. The region is also home to many large cities. In Argentina, Neuquén is a major urban center with over 500,000 people in its metropolitan area. In Chile, the Magallanes region has a population of over 1.5 million people.

Many people living in the region feel a unique sense of identity. They often do not identify as Latinos. Instead, they proudly call themselves Patagonians. This term is used by people from Chile, Argentina, and even non-Latin speaking areas. It serves as a patriotic and inclusive demonym. Some groups, such as Welsh settlers, have maintained distinct traditions. They kept their own languages, schools, and flags. This cultural identity remains strong even for Patagonians living abroad in places like Canada or Australia.
