In 1902, Robert Falcon Scott established a base camp nearby. He built a cabin known as Discovery Hut. This hut still stands as a historic monument on Hut Point. The station sits on volcanic rock. This site is the southernmost bare ground accessible by ship in the world.
Energy production at the station has changed over time. Today, the base uses a mixture of generators and wind power. In the 1960s, the station used a small nuclear reactor called the PM-3A. 
The station supports diverse scientific research. It is a base for many specialized projects. For example, the Lower Erebus Hut helps study the active volcano, Mount Erebus.
