McMurdo Station is a vital hub for scientific research in Antarctica.

It sits on the southern tip of Ross Island. The station is the largest community on the continent. It can support up to 1,200 residents during the busy summer. However, the population fluctuates with the seasons. During the dark Antarctic night, fewer than 200 people remain.

It is one of three year-round United States science facilities on the continent. The station operates under the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). This program is a branch of the National Science Foundation (NSF). It serves as a central logistics base for many international research projects.

Logistics at McMurdo involve complex transport systems. Personnel and cargo often pass through the station to reach the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station. Travelers may use flights or the McMurdo to South Pole Traverse. The Traverse is a snow and ice road that must be cleared every year.

For sea transport, the seaport is located at Winter Quarters Bay. Weather can make access difficult when sea ice forms. In these cases, an icebreaker may be needed to reach the port.

Air travel relies on airfields like Phoenix Airfield and Williams Field. These runways are built directly on the ice. The station also features a heliport and a refueling station at Marble Point.

The station's history began in the mid-1950s. It was established to support the International Geophysical Year (IGY). The IGY was a global scientific effort from 1957 to 1958. It involved 67 countries and over 4,000 research stations.

The United States officially opened McMurdo on February 16, 1956. This was part of Operation Deep Freeze. The U.S. Navy Seabees built the initial facility. It was originally called the Naval Air Facility McMurdo. The Navy managed the base until 1993. After that, the National Science Foundation took over primary responsibility.

McMurdo is named after Lieutenant Archibald McMurdo. He was an officer on the ship *Terror*. The area was first charted in 1841 by explorers Francis Crozier and James Clark Ross.

In 1902, Robert Falcon Scott established a base camp nearby. He built a cabin known as Discovery Hut. This hut still stands as a historic monument on Hut Point. The station sits on volcanic rock. This site is the southernmost bare ground accessible by ship in the world.

Energy production at the station has changed over time. Today, the base uses a mixture of generators and wind power.

In the 1960s, the station used a small nuclear reactor called the PM-3A.

This reactor provided 1.8 megawatts of power. It also powered a desalination plant. This plant produced about 14,000 gallons of fresh water from seawater every day. The reactor was eventually turned off due to concerns about stress corrosion. Currently, diesel generators provide power and heat for the buildings.

The station supports diverse scientific research. It is a base for many specialized projects. For example, the Lower Erebus Hut helps study the active volcano, Mount Erebus.

The WAIS Divide Camp focuses on ice coring projects. Other groups, like ANSMET, collect meteorites.

The station also hosts telecommunication sites. These include the Ross Island Earth Station and the NASA Ground Station. These facilities allow scientists to stay connected to the rest of the world.

Daily life at McMurdo follows a seasonal rhythm. The austral summer brings daylight and high activity. During this time, ships and planes bring in many supplies.

As the season changes, temperatures plunge and darkness increases. The polar night lasts from about April to September. Most flights stop during these months. The station is very remote. It is as far from New Zealand as New York is from Los Angeles. This isolation makes the work of the staff very important for global science.
