You can find it at the southwestern end of this island group. It sits southwest of Brabant Island. The island is very high and rocky. One very tall peak is Mount Francis. It reaches an elevation of 2,760 meters.

Scientists use the island to learn about the world. A small science outpost called Palmer Station sits on the south end. It has been there since the late 1960s. This is the only U.S. station north of the Antarctic Circle. About 50 people can live there at one time. Most people there study biology and the sea.

Because there is no regular airport, ships must bring supplies to the station.

Many explorers have visited this cold land. John Biscoe discovered the island in 1832. Later, a Belgian expedition named it in 1898. They named it after the province of Antwerp in Belgium. A French expedition also charted D'Abnour Bay between 1903 and 1905. They named that bay for a French naval officer named Richard d'Abnour. These explorers helped map the icy coastlines.

Different groups have lived on the island for science. The British Antarctic Survey once ran a station called Base N. They used it for geology and survey work from 1955 to 1958. That station was later used as a lab by Americans. Sadly, the British station burned down in 1971. Today, only the concrete foundations remain. Some parts of the island are also part of a special managed area.

Nature and geology make the island very special. The northwest part of the island sits on a tectonic block. This block is made of volcanic rocks. Scientists see different types of rock like granite and diorite there. The island also has many interesting shapes. There is a ridge called Zeus Ridge that has many deep cracks in the ice. Cormorant Island sits just 1 km off the south coast. It is an important place for birds.
