It is part of a group of lands called the French Southern and Antarctic Lands. The island sits in a very remote spot. It is roughly the same distance from Madagascar, Australia, and Antarctica.

It is also far from the British Indian Ocean Territory. This island is the northernmost volcanic land on the Antarctic Plate. It is a place of high peaks and steep cliffs.

The island is shaped by powerful volcanic forces. It sits on a large underwater area called the Amsterdam–Saint Paul Plateau. This plateau was made by a hot spot in the Earth. There are two main volcanoes on the island. One is called Le Mount du Fernand. The other is a younger volcano that dominates the area. The island has many different craters and vents. Some of these are named Cratere Antonelli and Le Cyclope. The highest point is Mont de la Dives. The west coast has huge cliffs called the Falaises d'Entrecasteaux.

People have found this island for a very long time. A Spanish explorer named Juan Sebastián Elcano first saw it in 1522. He called it "Isola dell'Amsterdam" because his crew needed water. Later, a Dutch mariner named Anthonie van Diemen saw it in 1633. He named it after his ship, the Amsterdam. Many sealers visited the island between 1789 and 1876. Sadly, nine of the sealing ships were wrecked there. France eventually took control of the island in 1843. It was part of Madagascar for many years. Now, it is part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands.

Today, the island is mostly used for science. There is only one settlement on the island. It is a research station named after Paul de Martin de Viviès.

About thirty researchers and staff live there during certain seasons. They study biology, weather, and magnetism. The station has been running since 1981. In early 2025, a wildfire broke out on the island. It was a hard time for the residents. The fire spread because the island is so far from help. It damaged the water supply and the radio tools.

Nature is very special on Île Amsterdam. The island is home to the Amsterdam albatross. This bird breeds only on the Plateau des Tourbières. You might also see penguins or skuas there. There is also a small forest of Phylica arborea trees.

This forest is very important to the island. In the past, fires and cattle damaged the trees. Now, people are working hard to help them grow back. They have planted more than 7,000 new trees. This helps keep the island's unique life safe for the future.
