Many people visit the island for science. They stay at Palmer Station on the south end. This is a U.S. base. It has been there since the late 1960s. About 50 people live there at one time. Most of them study biology and the sea. There is no airport. Ships must bring food and tools to the station.

A long time ago, the British built a station here too. They used it to study rocks. That station burned down in 1971. Now, only the concrete bases are left.

The island also has a place called D'Abnour Bay. French explorers found it a long time ago. They named it for a French naval officer. The island is a very grand and cold place.
