Berkner Island

geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Berkner Island is a place in Antarctica. It is an ice rise. This means a big dome of ice sits over rock. The rock is under the sea. If the ice went away, the land would be underwater. The island is all covered in ice. It sits between two large ice shelves. These are the Ronne and the Filchner ice shelves.

The island has two big domes. The north dome is Reinwarthhöhe. The south dome is Thyssenhöhe. There are three bays on the east side. These are McCarthy Inlet, Roberts Inlet, and Spilhaus Inlet. The north coast has Gould Bay. The south tip is called Mulvaney Promontory.

People found the island in 1957. They named it after Lloyd Berkner. He was an American physicist. Since 1990, people use the island to start long trips. They travel across the cold ice.

Birds live near the island too. A large group of emperor penguins lives nearby. There are about 8,000 birds in the colony. This area is a special place for birds.
