Shackleton led three trips to the Antarctic. In 1901, he joined the Discovery expedition. He traveled very far south with Robert Falcon Scott. They set a new record for how far south they could go. Later, in 1907, Shackleton went even further. He and his team came very close to the South Pole. For this, a King gave him a title of honor.

His most famous trip began in 1914. His ship was named the Endurance. The ship got stuck in thick ice. The ice crushed the ship, and it sank. Shackleton and his men had to survive on the ice. They used small boats to reach land. They stayed safe through many storms. Shackleton is still known today as a great leader.
