He was a central figure during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. This was a period of intense discovery in the frozen south. Shackleton led three major British expeditions to the Antarctic continent. He is best remembered for his incredible leadership during times of extreme crisis. Even though he faced many failures in business, his name lives on in history. Today, many people study his life to learn how to lead others through disasters.

Shackleton's early life was marked by a sense of restlessness. He was born on February 15, 1874, in Kilkea, Ireland. His family eventually moved to Sydenham, a suburb of London. As a child, he was a voracious reader. This passion for reading helped spark his desire for adventure. He found formal schoolwork quite boring. He specifically disliked the way teachers forced students to analyze poetry. Because he was restless, he left school at age sixteen to work at sea.

Before becoming a famous explorer, Shackleton built a strong career in the Merchant Navy. He began his training on the sailing ship Hoghton Tower. He spent four years learning the trade and visiting many different parts of the world. By 1894, he had passed his exam to become a second mate. In 1898, he earned his certificate as a master mariner. He served as a third officer under the command of Robert Falcon Scott. His duties included analyzing sea water and managing provisions. During this trip, Shackleton joined Scott and Edward Adrian Wilson on a march to the south. They reached a new record latitude of 82° 17' S. However, the journey was very difficult. The team suffered from frostbite, snow blindness, and scurvy. The expedition's dogs also died after their food became tainted. Because of his poor health, Scott sent Shackleton home early.

In 1907, Shackleton led the Nimrod Expedition. This trip was a massive success in terms of distance. He and three companions reached a new Farthest South latitude of 88° 23' S. This put them only 97 geographical miles from the South Pole. This was the largest advance toward the pole in exploration history at that time. During this mission, his team also climbed Mount Erebus, which is an active Antarctic volcano. For these achievements, King Edward VII knighted him.

He planned to cross Antarctica from sea to sea via the pole. His ship was named the Endurance. The mission turned into a disaster when the ship became trapped in pack ice. On November 21, 1915, the Endurance sank in the Weddell Sea. The crew had to camp on drifting sea ice. Eventually, they used lifeboats to reach Elephant Island. From there, Shackleton led a dangerous voyage across a stormy ocean to reach South Georgia. His leadership ensured that every member of the crew survived.

Shackleton died of a heart attack on January 5, 1922. He was at South Georgia when his ship was moored. He was buried in the Grytviken cemetery on that island.

While he was once largely forgotten, he was rediscovered in the 20th century. He is now a major role model for leadership in extreme circumstances. One contemporary, Sir Raymond Priestley, noted that while others were known for science or speed, people should look to Shackleton when disaster strikes. In 2002, a BBC poll even voted him the eleventh greatest Briton.
