A Norwegian group named it in 1929. They named it for Roald Amundsen. He was a famous polar explorer.

Large glaciers flow into this sea. The Pine Island and Thwaites Glaciers are two of the biggest. They move ice into the water. This area is called the Amundsen Sea Embayment. It is about the size of Texas.

Scientists think this area is a weak spot for the ice sheet.

Researchers say the glaciers are moving faster. This might happen because the ocean water is warming. A volcano was also found under the ice. It last erupted about 2,200 years ago. If these glaciers melt, sea levels will rise. One study says the area lost 3.3 trillion tons of ice. This happened between 1996 and 2021.

This loss raised sea levels by 9 millimeters.
