geography Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Queen Maud Land is a huge region in East Antarctica. It covers about one-fifth of the entire continent.

Norway claims this territory as its own. It is named after the Norwegian Queen Maud. The land is very large. It is roughly the same size as India or Argentina.

This area sits near other claimed lands. To the west is Coats Land. To the east is Enderby Land. The sea near the coast is the King Haakon VII Sea.

Most of this place is covered by a thick ice sheet. A tall wall of ice stretches along much of the coast. This ice wall makes it hard for ships to land. In some spots, rocky mountains poke through the top of the ice.

These mountains allow some plants to grow and birds to breed.

One of the highest peaks is Jøkulkyrkja. It sits in the Mühlig-Hofmann Mountains. Other big ranges include the Orvin and Wohlthat Mountains.

Deep under the ice, the ground is made of very old rock.

People first saw this land in the year 1820. However, it was hard to explore at first. Explorers needed both ships and planes to see it well. Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen was the first person known to set foot there in 1930.

Norway officially claimed the land in 1939. Before this, many whaling and sealing ships worked in the area. Later, other countries like Germany also tried to look at the land. After a big war, the rules for the land changed.

Today, no one lives in Queen Maud Land all year long. Instead, scientists visit to study the Earth. There are 12 active research stations in the region.

Some stations are used all year. Others are only used during the summer months. About 40 scientists stay there at one time. The numbers change depending on the season. One main station is called Troll.

Another station is the Russian Novolazarevskaya Station. These people use airfields to fly in and out.

Queen Maud Land is part of a special group called the Antarctic Treaty System. This means the land must be a demilitarised zone. This is a place where no military tools are allowed.

This helps everyone work together for science. Norway manages the land from the city of Oslo. It is one of two areas Norway claims in Antarctica. The other area is Peter I Island. This land helps us understand how ice and mountains work. It connects the history of explorers to the science of today.
