These islands are named Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie, and Oeno. Together, they make up a British Overseas Territory. The islands are spread across hundreds of kilometres of ocean. They cover a total area of about 47 square kilometres.

Henderson Island is the largest of the four. It holds about 86% of all the land. However, only Pitcairn Island has people living on it. The islands are very far from other lands. Mangareva is 688 km to the west. Easter Island is 1,929 km to the east.

Life on the islands began a long time ago. Polynesians were the first people to live there. They stayed on Pitcairn and Henderson for many centuries. Later, they left the islands and they were empty for a while.

European sailors found the islands much later. A Portuguese sailor named Pedro Fernandes de Queirós arrived in 1606. He saw Ducie and Henderson Islands. He gave them new names in Spanish. Later, a British ship called the HMS Swallow saw Pitcairn.

A young crew member named Robert Pitcairn saw it first. The island was named to honor him.

A famous story connects the islands to a ship. In 1790, a group of people arrived on Pitcairn. These were nine mutineers from the HMS Bounty. They came with twelve Tahitian women and one baby girl.

They set the Bounty on fire to stay hidden. The settlers lived by fishing and farming. At first, life was very hard for them. Many people died from disease or other troubles. Two men, John Adams and Ned Young, used the ship's Bible to find peace. They wanted to build a better society for everyone.

Many different ships visited the islands over the years. In 1808, an American ship called the Topaz arrived. This was the first ship to visit since the Bounty.

Later, the British government made the islands a colony in 1838. This was a big step for the community. At that time, they even gave women the right to vote. The population grew and changed over many years. In the mid-1850s, many people moved to Norfolk Island. Still, some families chose to return to Pitcairn. They wanted to stay in their home.

Today, the Pitcairn Islands are a very small place. In 2023, only 35 people lived there permanently. This makes it the smallest territory in the whole world.

Most people live in the village of Adamstown. Many islanders have moved to Australia or New Zealand lately. The islands have also faced very difficult times. In 1999, a police officer found evidence of serious abuse. This led to big trials in 2004. The British government even built a prison on the island. The history of the islands is both beautiful and very complex.
