He served as the chief of state and prime minister for many years. He held this high position from 1864 until 1895. This means he led the country for 31 years. He was part of a family of famous leaders. His father, Rainiharo, was a great military man and a prime minister too. Rainilaiarivony was born on 30 January 1828 in a village called Ilafy.

His early life was not always easy. He was born on a day that some people thought was unlucky. Because of this, he was treated differently by his family. He grew up in a home where relatives helped raise him. As a young boy, he worked very hard to succeed. He started a small business selling soap and fabric. He also studied medicine to help people who were sick.

His medical skills helped him earn trust at the royal palace. He even helped the Queen feel better when she was ill.

Rainilaiarivony rose through the ranks of the palace very quickly. He earned many special titles for his hard work. At age 24, he helped lead a large military trip. He and his brother led ten thousand soldiers and many helpers. This was a very big task for a young man. Later, he helped change how the government worked. He helped move the country toward a system where power was shared. This meant the Queen and the prime minister worked together.

As the leader, he wanted to make Madagascar a modern and strong nation. He wanted to keep his country independent from foreign empires. He made sure that public schooling was required for children. He also set up new courts and legal rules. He worked to change some old traditions to make things fairer. For example, he helped limit practices like slavery. He also helped the royal family follow Christian traditions. He built many things, including the Andafiavaratra Palace in 1873.

Rainilaiarivony was a very skilled diplomat and a strong leader. He defended Madagascar during the Franco-Hova Wars. He worked hard to keep his country's sovereignty. However, a French group eventually captured the royal palace in 1895. The French leaders took away his power. They sent him far away to a place called Algeria.
