He was born in Honolulu on the island of Oʻahu on February 9, 1834. His father was a high chief and his mother was a princess. His uncle, King Kamehameha III, adopted him to keep the royal family strong. Alexander was named ʻIolani Liholiho. His name ʻIolani means "royal hawk" or "hawk of heaven." This name honors the Hawaiian hawk.

As a young man, Alexander received a very special education. He went to the Royal School in Honolulu to study. He learned many skills like playing the piano and the flute. He also enjoyed singing, acting, and playing cricket. When he was 15, he went on a long trip to learn about the world. He traveled to England, the United States, and Panama. This trip was meant to help Hawaii be recognized as an independent country. He even kept a journal to record his many adventures.

During his travels, Alexander met many important world leaders. In France, he met President Louis Napoleon at the Tuileries. In England, he met Prince Albert and other famous people. However, his time in the United States was quite difficult. He faced unfair treatment because of his darker skin. A train conductor once mistook him for a servant. At a dinner party, a butler even played a mean trick on him. These hard moments made him dislike some American ideas.

Alexander became King in 1855 at the age of 20. He took over after his uncle, Kamehameha III, passed away. His first big job was to stop talks about Hawaii joining the United States. He worked hard to organize the Hawaiian military. He wanted to make sure the islands were safe from outsiders. He also worked with many advisors to help run the government. He served as the Commander in Chief of the Hawaiian forces.

In 1856, Alexander married Queen Emma. They were very happy together and loved theater and books.

They had one son named Prince Albert. Sadly, the young prince died when he was only four years old. This was a very sad time for the King and Queen. Alexander's own health also became poor later in life. He died on November 30, 1863. His life was filled with big responsibilities and many changes for Hawaii.
