He was born in November 1797 in Hilo. His birth name was Liholiho. He was the son of the great King Kamehameha I. When his father died in May 1819, Liholiho became king. He was very young at this time. Because he was young, he had limited power. Queen Kaʻahumanu helped him rule the islands. She became the first Kuhina Nui, or co-regent. She held much of the real power in the land.

One of the biggest changes happened during his reign. This event was called the 'Ai Noa. It happened about six months after he took the throne. Liholiho and Queen Kaʻahumanu sat down to eat a meal together. This broke the old religious laws known as the kapu system. These rules were very strict for many years. Breaking them led to the end of the old priesthood. It also led to the destruction of many old temples. This changed Hawaiian culture forever. Some people fought to keep the old ways. This led to the Battle of Kuamoʻo on the island of Hawaiʻi. The king's forces won that battle.

Kamehameha II loved grand and expensive things.

He once bought a royal yacht named Cleopatra's Barge. It cost him 8,000 piculs of sandalwood. That is over one million pounds of wood! He was very proud of his beautiful ship. He later had it repaired and renamed it Haʻaheo o Hawaiʻi. This name means "Pride of Hawaii." He even used the ship to host foreign visitors. He liked to entertain people with many different things. He was known to be a very impulsive person.

The king also wanted to travel to Great Britain. He wanted to meet King George IV in London. In November 1823, he and Queen Kamāmalu began the long journey. They sailed on a ship called the Eagle. They stopped in Brazil along the way. In Brazil, the king received a special diamond sword. The queen received a beautiful diamond ring. They finally arrived in Portsmouth, England, in May 1824. People in London were very curious about them. Some people even struggled to spell his name correctly.

Sadly, the trip to London ended in a tragedy. The Hawaiian royal court caught a disease called measles. They did not have immunity to this sickness. Queen Kamāmalu became ill and died on July 8, 1824. The king was very sad and died six days later. He died on July 14, 1824. Their bodies were sent back to Hawaii on a navy ship. They were buried in a special coral house. Later, they were moved to the Royal Mausoleum of Hawaii. His brother, Kauikeaouli, became the next king.
