Ramgoolam has a long history with the Labour Party. He has been the leader of this party since 1991. His path to leadership began with his education and family. Politics in Mauritius often involves many different groups working together. Ramgoolam has used coalitions to win elections. In 1995, his alliance won all 60 mainland seats. This alliance included the Labour Party and the MMM. However, the group split apart in 1997. In 2005, his group called Alliance Sociale won the election. He led this government with a majority of 38 seats. In 2010, he led the Alliance de L'Avenir. This group won 41 of the 60 mainland seats.

Not every part of his career was easy or successful. He faced some difficult losses in the elections. In 2014, his alliance won only 13 seats. He lost his own seat in that election. He resigned as prime minister in December 2014. He tried to run again in the 2019 elections. He moved to a different area to run for office. This area was Constituency No.10. However, he was not elected to the National Assembly that time either.
