He was a leading expert on Tibetan culture, history, and traditional medicine. His name is very poetic in the Tibetan language. "Namkhai" means sky, space, or aether. "Norbu" means jewel, crystal, or gem. Together, his name can be read as "jewel of the sky." He spent much of his life sharing these ancient ideas with people all over the world.

From a very young age, people saw him as a special kind of teacher. In Tibetan Buddhism, some masters are believed to be reborn. This is called being a tulku. When he was only two years old, he was recognized as the rebirth of a teacher named Adzom Drugpa. At age five, he received even more recognition from other important leaders. Because of these special honors, he was given the title "Chögyal," which means Dharma King.

Norbu had a very busy and deep education. He studied at the Derge Gonchen monastery and a Sakya college. He learned Buddhist philosophy and many different religious teachings. He studied with many different masters, including his own uncles. When he was sixteen, he met his main teacher, Rigdzin Changchub Dorje. Under this teacher, he learned Dzogchen, which is a special way of understanding the mind. He also learned about Tibetan medicine and how to use it.

In 1960, Norbu moved to Italy after meeting a scholar named Giuseppe Tucci. He became a professor at Naples Eastern University in 1964. He taught there for many years until 1992.

He did not just teach languages, though. He also organized big meetings about Tibetan medicine and language. He even started the Shang Shung Institute to help keep Tibetan traditions alive. He wanted to make sure these important ideas were never lost.

Norbu helped create a global community for his students. He founded the Dzogchen Community, which has centers in many different places. These centers are in countries like the US, Mexico, Australia, Russia, and China.
