He was born in 1862 at Wangdicholing Palace. His father was a ruler named Jigme Namgyal. Ugyen learned how to lead and fight at a young age. He grew up during a time of many fights in his land. In 1876, he joined his father in a battle when he was only 14. Later, in 1878, he became a leader called the Penlop of Paro. He was only 16 years old then. He worked hard to bring peace to his country.

Ugyen worked to bring different parts of Bhutan together. After his father died in 1881, Ugyen took on many big jobs. He tried to be kind to people who did not like his father. In 1882, he became the Penlop of Trongsa. This was a very powerful position in the land. He faced more fighting from people who disagreed with him. In 1886, there was a big battle at Changlimethang. Ugyen won this fight when he was 24 years old. This victory helped him become the main ruler of Bhutan.

For a long time, Bhutan was ruled by different leaders called Druk Desis. This had happened for 256 years. In 1907, things changed in a big way. On 17 December 1907, Ugyen Wangchuck became the first king.

Ugyen also traveled to other places to help Bhutan. In 1904, he went to Tibet to help people talk to each other. He also visited leaders in India. In 1906, he met the Prince of Wales in Kolkata. Later, in 1911, he met King George V in Delhi. These trips helped Bhutan stay safe during hard times. He even updated an old treaty in 1910. He wanted to make sure Bhutan was protected from outside trouble. He was a very smart leader who looked far into the future.

Ugyen cared deeply about learning and religion. He was a great supporter of Buddhism. In 1894, he helped build the Kurjey temple. He also sent young monks to study in Tibet so they could teach others. Ugyen also wanted children to learn new things. He started the first western schools in places like Lame Goenpa. These schools helped many boys learn so they could become leaders later. He died in 1926 at the age of 64. He left behind a country that was much more united.
