The people of Zhangzhung had their own culture. They practiced a religion called Bon. This religion helped shape Tibetan Buddhism later on. The capital city was Khyunglung. Some call it the Silver Palace of Garuda. It sat near Mount Kailash. This mountain is a very holy place.

Zhangzhung was a big land. It covered parts of Tibet, Ladakh, and Gilgit. Some say it had three main regions. These were Goba, Phugpa, and Barba.

Later, a Tibetan leader named Songtsen Gampo took over. Some stories say he won through war. Other stories say he used a trick. He killed King Ligmikya of Zhangzhung. After that, Zhangzhung became part of Tibet. The land stayed under Tibetan rule for a long time. Even when people revolted, leaders brought it back under control. Today, we still study these ancient lands to learn more.
