In some areas, the weather is mild. The winters are not as harsh as elsewhere. This makes it a good place for people to live. The eastern part is a cradle for nomadic life. The Orkhon Valley is a special world heritage site there. Many old groups lived in these valleys. They built capitals in this region long ago.

The mountains have many high peaks. Otgontenger is the tallest peak. It is about 4,000 metres high. People think this mountain is sacred. To the east of Tsetserleg is Suvraga Khairkhan. It is 3,117 metres tall. There is also an extinct volcano field. It is called Taryatu-Chulutu. The mountains feed many rivers. These include the Orkhon and Selenge rivers. They also feed lakes like Orog and Böön Tsagaan. In the west, the land turns into the Great Lakes Depression.
