One peak is Mount Elbert. It is the highest peak in the whole Rocky Mountain area. The range also has fifteen peaks that are over 14,000 feet tall. People call these "fourteeners."

The mountains are massive. Their shapes are often gentle. Some peaks are rough and hard to climb. Most peaks need a long, hard hike.

Water flows from these mountains in different ways. The east side flows into the Arkansas River. The west side feeds rivers like the Eagle and the Gunnison. Many people visit to hike. You can find trails in the San Isabel and White River forests. Some roads go over high mountain passes. These passes are often closed in winter. They only open from spring to autumn.
