They run along the western edge of South America. This big chain of mountains goes through seven countries. These are Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela.

The Andes are very tall. The highest peak is Aconcagua in Argentina. It is 6,961 meters high.

There are also many volcanoes in the range. Some of these volcanoes are very active. One famous peak is Chimborazo in Ecuador. Because of how the Earth spins, its top is the farthest point from the Earth's center.

Many people live in the mountains. Large cities sit on high, flat lands called plateaus. For example, La Paz is a major city in the mountains.

The weather changes a lot in the Andes. Some areas have wet cloud forests. Other areas, like the Altiplano, are very dry. The mountains also hold many riches, like copper and salt.
