geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A mountain range is a line of mountains or hills. They are connected by high ground. Most big ranges form from plate tectonics. This is the way Earth's large plates move.

Ranges can change the weather. When air moves up a mountain, it cools. This makes rain or snow fall. The other side of the mountain is often dry. The Andes is a very long range in South America. It can split a continent into different climate zones.

Mountains do not stay the same. Erosion works to tear them down. Rivers help by cutting into rock. This moves bits of rock to low places.

We can find mountains in space too. Some are made of rock. Others are made of ice. On Saturn's moon Titan, mountains are made of ice. On the Moon, mountains can form from impacts. An impact is when something hits a planet.
