A mountain range is a long line of mountains or hills. These peaks are all connected by high ground. Sometimes, you might see a group of ranges together. This is called a mountain system or a mountain belt. These groups often look and act in similar ways. They usually form from the same big event. Most major ranges on Earth come from plate tectonics. This is how the large plates of the Earth move.

Mountains can change the weather in a big way. When air moves up over a mountain, it begins to cool. This cooling causes rain or snow to fall. This is called orographic precipitation. As the air moves down the other side, it warms up. This side of the mountain is often much drier. This dry area is called a rain shadow. Large ranges like the Andes can split a continent into different climate zones.

Mountains are always changing because of erosion. Forces in nature work to tear them down. Rivers are a very important part of this process. They cut into the bedrock and carry bits of rock away. These bits are called sediment. This sediment can fill up low areas nearby. Over a long time, mountains can even turn into low hills or plains. For example, the Rocky Mountains once had rock removed by erosion. This rock spread across the Great Plains to the east.

There are many famous mountain ranges on our planet. The Andes in South America is a very long system. The Alpide belt is also huge. It stretches 15,000 km across southern Eurasia. This belt includes the Himalayas and the Alps. The Himalayas have the highest mountains, like Mount Everest. If we look underwater, the Ocean Ridge is the longest system. It is a continuous chain of mountains on the ocean floor.

We can also find mountains in space. On the Moon, mountains often form from impacts. An impact is when something hits a surface. Some mountains in space are made of rock. On Venus, Maxwell Montes is taller than any mountain on Earth. Other moons have mountains made of ice. Saturn's moon Titan has ranges like the Mithrim Montes. Pluto also has ice mountains called the Tenzing Montes. Even Jupiter's moon Io has mountain ranges from tectonic processes.

Mountain ranges are formed through many different geological processes. They are not always made of the same materials. Individual mountains within one range might have different geologic structures. They can also have different petrology, which is the study of rock types. A single range might contain a mix of different features. These can include thrust sheets, uplifted blocks, fold mountains, and volcanic landforms. This variety means that different rock types can exist side by side.

Large mountain ranges have a massive impact on the climate. This happens because of how they interact with air masses. When air moves up and over a mountain, the air cools. This cooling produces orographic precipitation, which is rain or snow. As the air descends on the leeward side, it warms up again. This warming follows the adiabatic lapse rate. The air on this side is much drier because it has lost its moisture. This often creates a rain shadow on the leeward side. Large ranges like the Andes can divide a continent into distinct climate regions.

Erosion is a constant force that works to tear mountain ranges down. This process happens even while the mountains are being uplifted. Rivers are believed to be the main cause of this erosion. They cut into the bedrock and transport sediment. Sediment is the material that is carried away. These sediments often fill nearby basins. Over time, these materials can be buried and turned into sedimentary rock. In the Rocky Mountains, erosion removed Mesozoic sedimentary strata from the core. This material spread as sand and clays across the Great Plains. This removal of weight may have caused further uplift through isostatic adjustment.

Many famous mountain systems exist on Earth. The Andes in South America is a very long system. It is often called the world's longest mountain system on the land surface. The Alpide belt is another massive system. It stretches 15,000 km across southern Eurasia. This belt goes from Java in Southeast Asia to the Iberian Peninsula in Europe. It includes the Himalayas, the Karakoram, and the Alps. The Himalayas contain the highest mountains, such as Mount Everest.

If we include underwater mountains, the scale of mountain systems changes. The Ocean Ridge is the world's longest continuous mountain system. It is a massive chain located on the ocean floor.

Other important ranges include the Appalachians and the Great Dividing Range. The Pacific Ring of Fire also contains many young ranges. This includes the North American Cordillera and the Aleutian Range. These ranges are part of a larger, active geological system.

We can also find mountains on other objects in our Solar System. On the Moon, mountains like the Montes Apenninus often form from impact events. These are caused by objects hitting the surface.
