These mountains formed through a slow and powerful way of working. Deep under the ocean, the Nazca Plate is sliding beneath the South American Plate. This process is called subduction. The mountains are part of the American Cordillera. This is a large chain of mountain ranges. It forms the western backbone of the Americas and Antarctica.

The formation of the Andes is a result of tectonic plate processes. This process is known as orogeny, which is the process of mountain building. The mountains sit along the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is a zone of intense volcanic activity. The primary cause is the subduction of oceanic crust. Specifically, the Nazca Plate and the Antarctic Plate are sliding beneath the South American Plate. This convergence causes the western rim of the South American Plate to contract. This contraction pushes the land upward to create the high peaks.

Climate plays a significant role in how these mountains grow. As the Andes rose, they created a rain shadow on the western edges of Chile. This happened because the mountains blocked moisture. Ocean currents and prevailing winds carried moisture away from the coast. This left some areas of the subduction zone without much sediment. Without sediment, the subducting plate lacked a lubricated surface. This lack of lubrication actually increased the rate of coastal uplift. This shows how weather and geology can work together to shape the land.

The Andes can be divided into several distinct sections. Geographically, they are split into the Northern, Central, and Southern Andes. The Northern Andes include Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. The Central Andes cover Bolivia and Peru. The Southern Andes are located in Argentina and Chile.

Within these sections, the mountains are further divided by climate. Scientists group them into the Tropical Andes, the Dry Andes, and the Wet Andes. This creates many different ecological zones. These zones range from humid cloud forests to arid high plains.

The history of this mountain building began millions of years ago. The process started during the Triassic period when Pangaea began to break up. The development continued through the Jurassic Period. The Andes began to take their present form during the Cretaceous Period. This happened through the uplifting and folding of rocks. The rise of the mountains has not been constant. Different regions experienced different levels of tectonic stress and erosion.
