The Andes are a massive chain of mountains in South America.

They are the longest continental mountain range on our planet. This huge system stretches about 8,900 kilometers long. It runs along the western edge of the continent. The mountains pass through seven different countries. These are Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela.

These mountains formed through a slow and powerful way of working. Deep under the ocean, the Nazca Plate is sliding beneath the South American Plate. This process is called subduction. As the plates move, the land is pushed upward. This creates high peaks and deep valleys. This movement also makes the earth shake with earthquakes.

The history of these mountains began a very long time ago. The process of building the Andes started during the Triassic period. It continued through the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The mountains have not grown at the same speed everywhere. Some parts rose faster than others due to different stresses. This long history created the rugged landscape we see today.

The Andes hold many amazing records and numbers. Aconcagua in Argentina is the highest peak at 6,961 meters.

The peak of Chimborazo in Ecuador is very special too. Because the Earth bulges at the center, Chimborazo is the farthest point from the Earth's center.

You can also find huge volcanoes here. Ojos del Salado sits on the border of Chile and Argentina. It rises to 6,893 meters.

Life in the Andes is shaped by the high ground. Many large cities sit on high, flat areas called plateaus.

For example, La Paz and El Alto are major highland cities. The Altiplano is the second highest plateau in the world. The weather changes depending on where you stand. You might find wet cloud forests or very dry plains. The mountains also hold valuable things like copper and salt.
