They sit in British Columbia and Alberta. To the east, you will find the flat prairies. To the west is a deep trench called the Rocky Mountain Trench.

These mountains are made of limestone and shale. These are types of layered rock. The mountains look very jagged. This is because old ice, called glaciers, carved the land.

The area is cool and wet. This makes the soil moist and the rivers large. Many big rivers start here. These include the Fraser and the Columbia rivers. Mount Robson is the highest peak in the range.

Mount Columbia is the second highest. Much of this land is kept safe in national parks. Four of these parks sit next to each other. They are Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, and Yoho. You can also visit Waterton Lakes near the border of the United States.
