The Pacific Coast Ranges are a long chain of mountains.

They stretch along the West Coast of North America. This area goes from Alaska all the way south to Mexico. These mountains are part of a much larger group. This big group is called the North American Cordillera.

The mountains look different depending on where you are. In the north, you will see huge icefields. These are large areas of ice.

In Alaska, the mountains meet the sea in a maze of islands and fjords. In the south, the land is much warmer. You might see oak trees or shrubs.

Some parts of the coast drop very steeply into the ocean.

The mountains also change the weather. In the north, they can catch cool air. This brings heavy rain and snow. In the south, the mountains can block the wet air. This creates dry desert areas on the other side. Many different types of rock make up these ranges. Some rocks are very old. Other rocks are only 10,000 years old.
