Pacific Coast Ranges

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Pacific Coast Ranges are a long chain of mountains along the West Coast of North America.

They stretch all the way from Alaska down to northern and central Mexico. These mountains are part of a much larger system called the North American Cordillera. This big system includes many other famous places like the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. While people often think these are the westernmost mountains, the Insular Mountains of Vancouver Island actually sit even further west.

This vast area covers many different lands and seas.

Nature looks very different as you travel along these ranges. In the north, the mountains mix with the sea to create a maze of islands and fjords.

You can find huge icefields here that are some of the largest in the world. Moving south, the landscape changes into warmer areas with oak woodlands and shrubs.

In some places, the mountains drop very steeply into the ocean. You might also see flat plains near river mouths where water has carried sediment from the mountains.

These plains help shape the land near rivers like the Fraser or the Columbia.

These mountains also play a big role in the local weather. In the north, cool air from the Gulf of Alaska hits the mountains. This brings a lot of rain and snow to the western slopes.

In Southern California, the mountains work in a different way. They can block wet air from moving inland. This creates a rainshadow, which is a dry area that leads to deserts. This is why some parts of the coast are wet while others are very dry. The mountains act like a giant wall for the wind.

Geologists have studied how these mountains were built over millions of years. Much of the land was formed by pieces of earth called terranes. These pieces moved and joined onto the edge of the continent.

Long ago, the movement of the North American plate helped create this active margin. Even though the mountains are grouped together, they are made of many different types of rock. Some rocks are very old from the Precambrian period. Other rocks, like those in the Cascade Range, are only about 10,000 years old.

This makes the area a very interesting place for science.

Today, these ranges are important to the people and animals living nearby. Many famous mountain names are part of this system.

You can find the Olympic Mountains in Washington or the Coast Mountains in British Columbia. In California, there are the Santa Monica Mountains and the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico. These mountains affect how people live and how they use the land. Whether they are covered in ice or green trees, they are a huge part of the coast. They connect many different countries and environments together.
