earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Ojos del Salado is a very big volcano.

It sits on the border of Argentina and Chile. This volcano is the highest on Earth. It is also the highest peak in Chile. The mountain is not just one cone. It is a complex made of many parts. These parts include lava domes and craters.

The area is very dry. This dry weather stops large glaciers from forming. Because it is so dry, there are no plants.

There is a special lake at the top. It sits inside a summit crater. This is the highest lake in the world.

The lake is fed by snow and permafrost. Permafrost is ground that stays frozen for a long time. You might also see penitentes on the slopes. These are tall spikes of ice. They form when sun and wind change the ice. The last eruption was around 750 CE. Some people saw steam in 1993. This might have been a new event.
