The name Sawatch comes from a Ute word. That word is "sawup," which means "sand dunes." The name is also spelled "Saguache" in Spanish. This range is very important because it is so high. It holds eight of the twenty highest peaks in the Rockies.

Water moves through these mountains in two main ways. The range forms part of the Continental Divide. This is a line that splits where water flows. On the eastern side, water flows into the Arkansas River. On the western side, water flows into several other rivers. These include the Roaring Fork, the Eagle, and the Gunnison rivers. All of these rivers eventually flow into the Colorado River.

Many people love to visit these mountains to explore. The peaks are massive and have gentle shapes. Some are very rugged and need expert climbing. Most can be reached by a long, hard hike.

You can find many hiking trails in the area. These trails are inside the San Isabel and White River National Forests. People often travel through high mountain passes to cross the range. Independence Pass and Cottonwood Pass are two famous examples.

There are many famous peaks to see here. Mount Elbert is the highest point in the Rockies. It is 14,440 feet tall. Mount Massive is the second highest at 14,428 feet. Mount Harvard is the third highest at 14,421 feet. The range has fifteen peaks that are over 14,000 feet. People call these special peaks "fourteeners." Other famous summits include La Plata Peak and the Collegiate Peaks.

Traveling through the range can be tricky. High passes like Cottonwood Pass are over 12,000 feet. These roads are usually only open from late spring to mid-autumn. In the winter, the snow makes them hard to use. Hagerman Pass is another way through the mountains. You can use a four-wheel drive vehicle there. You can also walk through it during the summer months.
