It sits in the Rocky Mountains of North America. It is the highest peak in the Sawatch Range. This mountain is also the highest point in the Mississippi River drainage basin. That is the area where water flows into the Mississippi River.

The mountain was named for Samuel Hitt Elbert. He was a leader in Colorado. People often call it the "gentle giant." This is because the climbing paths are not too hard. Most paths do not need special rock climbing skills.

Weather can change very fast on the mountain. You might see snow even in the summer. Afternoon storms often come when it is warm.

Many animals live on the slopes. You might see black bears, mule deer, or elk. Small animals like pikas and marmots live in the rocks. Many pretty plants grow there too. One is a white orchid called Platanthera hyperborea.
