This peak is the highest in the eastern part of North America. It is part of the Black Mountain range. A state park protects the mountain. The Pisgah National Forest is also nearby.

The top of the mountain has a thick forest. Most trees are red spruce or Fraser fir. These are evergreen trees. Many fir trees died in the last century. This happened because of a tiny insect.

The weather at the top is very cold. It feels more like Canada than the south. Winters are long and cold. Heavy snow often falls from December to March. The summit is also very windy.

In the summer, the mountain is green and lush. Many wildflowers grow there. You can also find wild blueberries and blackberries.

A stone tower once stood on the peak. Now, there is a new observation deck. People can visit it to see the view. A paved trail leads up to the top.
